Malibu's only Lagoon

Did you know that Malibu has a Lagoon? I didn't either. But during a recent class, our professor took us on a half-day field trip to this hidden gem.

Only 13 miles north of Santa Monica, the the Malibu Lagoon is located where the Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, and is home to grunions, monarch butterflies, and tide pools. I was told that sometimes you can see gray whales from a distance!

While my classmates and I played along the shore and discovered new marine creatures, many visitors fish in the area, while others picnic and bird watch.

For those that prefer to relax, the lagoon also has a beach with wetland areas, saltwater marsh and seasonal flower gardens.

Visiting the Malibu Lagoon was a highlight of that particular class, and an unexpected experience - even for a jaded Westsider like myself.

I've gone back several times since that first class visit, and each time I love the tranquility of this natural escape even more.

If you live in the area or plan on visiting Los Angeles in the future, you might want to escape to this unexpected spot in the middle of Malibu.
